Lecture & Internship

Q2-1. What is the LIMS pre-research?

A2-1. The pre-research is intended as a phase for designing the research plan for the doctoral degree thesis with the aim to cultivate the capability in our students to conduct research with an interdisciplinary view-point. There will be no master’s thesis-research for the LIMS program itself, but “pre-research” that accompanies the master’s thesis-research for the laboratory of affiliation.

Q2-2. Are the LIMS research and the thesis-research for the graduate school of affiliation different projects?

A2-2. In the LIMS program, the students will engage in their chosen LIMS research in addition to their doctoral degree research. However, for the LIMS research students should move beyond the borders of a single existing field or a single laboratory’s research expertise when setting up their project. For this reason, students are requested to consult with the supervising professors of their research laboratory of affiliation and with LIMS program teachers when they determine their research topic.

Q2-3. Can the program students’ LIMS research be conducted only in the research laboratories a student is assigned to?

A2-3. If a student wishes to conduct LIMS research outside of her / his assigned research laboratory (outside of the graduate school or outside of the laboratories existing in the department), there will be no restrictions from the side of the LIMS program. At present, to ensure that the LIMS research is in accordance with the graduate school of affiliation, please consult with the graduate school of affiliation, the supervising professors, and mentors in advance.

Q2-4. What kind of degree will graduates of the LIMS program be awarded?

A2-4. The degree evaluation will be conducted at the graduate school to which the student is affiliated, the doctoral degree will be awarded by Kyoto University. In addition, for graduates of the LIMS program, graduation in the “Training program of leaders for integrated medical system for fruitful healthy-longevity society” will be certified. For further details on the requirements for acquiring the degree, please confirm with the relevant graduate school.

Q2-5. Is it possible to complete the LIMS program in 2 years and just obtain a master’s degree?

A2-5. The Program for Leading Graduate Schools, which the LIMS program belongs to is designed as a 5-year continuous program (or 4 years for the doctoral course program), so it is not possible to enter with the intention to complete the program after 2 years with a master’s degree. However, if a student has to finish after completing the master’s course only (first two years) due to unavoidable reasons, the requirements of the graduate school of affiliation for obtaining a master’s degree should be followed.

Q3-2. Specifically, what will the English debate seminar entail?

A3-2. The English debate seminar intends for students
a) to improve their ability to form and express their opinions in English, in front of an audience with different scientific backgrounds and nationalities,
b) to improve their ability to react to questions and to defend their opinion, and
c) to improve their ability to refute others’ arguments.
Thus, students will engage in free discussions, in simulations with role-play, but also in formal debates in which they form teams to argue against each other. Furthermore, they will practice presentation and question-and-answer sessions. Topics will range from science, to current politics, societal and health system issues.

Q3-3. Anatomy practicals are compulsory, but what exactly is involved?

A3-3. Human anatomy practice is one of the important features of the LIMS program’s curriculum, in which students even with non-medical backgrounds can learn practical knowledge about the human body. In detail, students have on site visit of gross anatomy training on cadavers carried out by the Faculty of Medicine for medical students. LIMS students will wear a white coat, gloves, actually touch muscles and organs, and confirm the pathways of the blood vessels and nerves on cadavers.
In addition, plastic models and X-ray photos of some body parts are compared with the actual structures on cadavers, helping students to gain knowledge applicable to diagnostic technologies. Through these and other lectures, such as description of osteology and brain practice training processes using special plastic models, students will gain deep knowledge and understanding of the human body.

Q3-4. At what kind of institutions can the internship be done?

A3-4. From the side of the LIMS program, there are no predetermined target institutions. Based on the self-chosen research topic, students should search for host institutions, plan the internship project, establish communication with the host institution and implement the internship plan themselves. With the advice of their supervising professors, LIMS professors, their LIMS mentors, and LIMS teachers responsible for the internships, the students should make a tailor-made internship plan. Typical host institutions are domestic and overseas corporations, government institutions, and research institutions, but the internships are in no way restricted to those.
